Video Blackjack and Video Poker Machines

Slot machine addicts will enjoy the new games offered by all of the Atlantic City casinos, video blackjack, draw poker, and progressive slot machines. Video blackjack is played on a slot-machine-like device with a TV screen showing the player's hand and the dealer's hand. The machine is programmed to deal from a 52-card deck shuffled after each game. The rules vary from casino to casino, and I would estimate the odds against the player in this game to be anywhere from 5 to 10%. Golden Nugget offers the best video-blackjack game. The rules are as follows: • The dealer stands on all 17's. • Ties are returned to the player. • Insurance pays two to one. • Split any pair (split aces, take one card only). • Double down on any two cards of 11 or less. • All wins (including blackjack) pay one to one. You may bet from $1 to $8 on the play of each hand. Card counters have no advantage, as the cards are shuffled after each hand.

Bally's, Hi-Ho, the Sands, and Resorts offer similar video- blackjack games, in which the house takes all ties except for blackjack, but blackjack pays three to two as opposed to even money. These games offer a six-card automatic winner, and you may double down on 10 and 11 only. Pair-split and insurance options are not available, and the loss of a tie makes this game less attractive than the one at the Golden Nugget. Playboy and Caesars offer a similar game, except with no pair-splitting or insurance options, and doubling on 10 and 11 only. They do return the ties to the player and automatically pay a six-card hand. All wins pay one to one.

Video draw poker is offered in all casinos, with slightly varying rules. Betting from $1 to $5, you can win as mush as $5,000 on a royal flush (with a $5 bet). The best games are found at the Hi-Ho, the Sands, and again at the Golden Nugget. The table of payoffs is shown below. Hand Payoff per dollar bet • Two pairs $ 2 • Three of a kind $ 3 • Straight $ 5 • Flush $ 7 • Full House $ 10 • Four of a kind $ 40 • Straight flush $ 100 • Royal flush $ 500

The payoffs shown are for each dollar bet except for the royal flush, which increases to $5,000 for a maximum bet of $5. Although its payoffs aren't quit as good as those listed above, Caesars probably offers the best odds because your bet is returned to you if your hand ends up as a pair of jacks or better.
